New guidelines on the rules for the use of the names of spirit drinks in the labelling of a foodstuff and the labelling of spirit drinks.

2022-03-10

New guidelines on the principles for using the names of spirit beverages in the labelling of foodstuffs, e.g. "whiskey-flavoured" and on the labelling of spirit beverages.

The European Commission has published guidelines on, among others, the definition, description, presentation and labelling of spirit beverages as well as the use of the names of spirit beverages in the presentation and labelling of other foodstuffs and also on the protection of geographical indications of spirit beverages.

The guidelines provide practical explanations on the labelling of spirit drinks, indicating whether claims such as coffee advocate or brandy liqueur are allowed. They also refer to the labelling of foodstuffs with claims such as rum-flavoured cake or gin-flavoured sweets.
